History

The Galtström ironworks were founded in 1673. They were the first, largest and longest-surviving ironworks out of a total of 12 in the county of Medelpad.
One of the founders was Magnus Blix. He gathered together the local farmers in Dingersjö inn and purchased the water and forestry rights for the sum of 400 Swedish daler (large copper coins) and 22 barrels of salt.
The reason for this was access to the forests, needed by the blast furnaces which consumed vast amounts of wood.
Wood for turning into charcoal was scarce in the vicinity of the mines, most of which were located in the Bergslagen mining area. Here, much further north, there were still plenty of forests and water power.
Through the centuries, the works have had many owners and tenants.
The first company to own the works was Klosters ironworks which purchased Galtström in 1873.
Under Kloster’s management, Galtström flourished for some decades.
They made everything from iron stoves to nails, focusing on bar iron and mill bars.
In 1903 the works were sold to Sund AB. They closed it down the following year for the first time.
The need for timber for the sawmills in the city of Sundsvall was the main reason for the purchase.
From 1910 until the final closedown, the works were rented by the Axel Jonson Group and supplied Europe with iron for the arms race.
In January 1916, a strike brought an end to more than 240 years of mining. The sawmills also came to a stop with a strike in June 1919.
Until 1930, timber was floated downstream and then taken by a steam engine called Loke to the harbour to be towed to Sundsvall.
In the autumn of 1965, the last cows disappeared from the farms run by SCA.
Today, the Galtström ironworks are a heritage site of national importance, owned and managed by SCA. They are also one of Medelpad’s largest tourist attractions, with more than 30,000 visitors a year.

Loke

In 1887, a 15 hp steam engine was purchased for the works. The supplier was Kristinehamns Mekaniska Verkstad. Loke (as in locomotive) was used at the mine up until 1916, and was then used to pull timber until 1930. At the end of the 1980s, two young and idealistic train enthusiasts, Håkan Zaar and Magnus Jonsson, started doing renovations. Håkan has continued doing this work with great commitment. In the 1990s, the FGT (Galtström Train Association) was formed. Torbjörn Jonsson and Urban Gagner plus others brought experience and resources, with the result that a renovated Loke could return on Midsummer Day 1997. These days the old track has proper rails again.

FGT members are doing great work, taking passengers and keeping the steam engine and railway in tip-top condition. Three new wagons are being built and will soon be providing train services at Galtström.

The church

Galtström church is one of the most popular in the district for weddings and baptisms. Also on the programme are summertime music and at Christmas, a traditional early church service on Christmas Day. The Walloons, brought in from today's Belgium to manage the mines, refused to work there unless there was a church. The foundations were laid on 26 March 1680. Two months later, the church was ready for the first service, held on 30 May. The construction was managed by the tenant and works owner, and was presumably done by the mine workers. The ornamentation took a full 16 years, and was done by Jöns Olofsson from Skedvik in Attmars parish, and his son Olof Jönsson. The consecration of the church was not until 1697, when Karl XII was King of Sweden. The church was spared when in 1721 Russian invaders set fire to the works. There are many theories as to why they did not burn it down, but probably to show respect for churches, as these were spared in several other places that were also ravaged. These days, the church is owned by Njurunda parish. The churchwarden is Marianne Harlin who grew up in Galtström and still lives there.
